Synopsis

The municipal history of the Late Medieval centuries marked Tuscan cities so profoundly that the 'Commune after the Commune' survived. The essays from the Montevarchi Conference of 2021 collected in this volume investigate this continuity of municipal institutions after the 15th century, that is, within the political structures of the Ancient Regime, both within the Florentine - later Medici - territorial state and in the experiences of the cities of Siena and Lucca, Pisa, Pistoia, Arezzo and Prato, which from the 15th century onwards elaborated their own city institutions always proudly in the wake of a past that was the bearer of prestige and recognition even in the face of Florence. The history of city institutions is here fully brought to light by emphasizing the relevance of the communes over a very long period that reaches the season of eighteenth-century reformism.
