Huter Ihrer Nationen: Studentische Verbindungen in Deutschland Und Polen Im 19. Und Frühen 20. Jahrhundert
Synopsis
Student connections have so far been considered a singular phenomenon in the German-speaking world. The present study breaks with this idea. It systematically illuminates how the well-known connection model from the 19th century 'wanders' eastwards through the contact between German and Polish students and leads to the establishment of an independent Polish connection system. Using the example of different forms of connection, the transfer of German customs and its change will be understood in a new national framework. The study reveals a barely known subculture and its dueling practices and thus questions previously established German characteristics of the duel. It also draws attention to a specifically student level of conflict-prone German-Polish relations. The study also focuses on self-image as an educational elite, attitudes to political and religious questions, and the Jewish minority.
