Modern Masonry originated in London, England in the year 1717. It evolved from a brotherhood of artisan builders (or stonemasons) in the Middle Ages. According to scholars, many historical documents referring to Masonry were destroyed in 1720 by the founders of the Grand Lodge, for fear that their publications might produce negative consequences.
