Synopsis

Hero and Leander is a romantic poem written by the German poet Musaeus in 1783. The poem tells the story of the love affair between Hero, a priestess of Aphrodite, and Leander, a young man from Abydos. The two lovers live on opposite sides of the Hellespont, a narrow strait that separates Europe from Asia. Despite the dangerous waters and the disapproval of their families, Hero and Leander fall deeply in love and begin to meet secretly at night. However, tragedy strikes when Leander drowns while attempting to swim across the Hellespont to see Hero during a storm. Hero is heartbroken and throws herself from a tower into the sea, hoping to be reunited with her beloved in death. The poem is a poignant exploration of the power of love and the dangers of passion. Musaeus' lyrical language and vivid imagery bring the story to life, making it a timeless classic of romantic literature. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
