The Jewish Studies encompass all areas that are relevant to the study of Jewish history, philosophy, and religion. They represent a relatively young subject in the German academic landscape, but an area of "growing importance". Jewish religion and culture have left deep traces in German and European history, philosophy and literature; they were influenced by the changeable relationship between the Jewish and Christian religions, which at times made tolerant coexistence possible, but in others it led to persecution, hatred and -- as in Germany in the 20th century -- led to genocide. The manual tries to give insights into the history of Judaism along individual terms such as ritual, enlightenment, diaspora, Sefarad / Ashkenaz or Zionism as well as various research areas such as philosophy, mysticism, law or economics. Anyone who wants to know more about the rules and the events that shaped Jewish history and brought about modern forms of Jewish life will find many approaches and in-depth insights.
