Aged only 42, Hermann Heller died on September 5, 1933 in exile in Spain. His Theory of the State (Staatslehre) counts as one of his most important works and although he was unable to fully complete it, it nevertheless helped define the concept of the social state based on the rule of law. Indeed, his works as a whole are considered fundamental to understanding the social-democratic state.
