Gedächtnisort Der Republik: Das Österreichische Heldendenkmal Im Åueren Burgtor Der Wiener Hofburg
Synopsis
The hero monument in the outer castle gate of the Vienna Hofburg is the central place of state-military commemoration of the Republic of Austria. The memorial for the fallen of the First World War and the Habsburg Army was built in 1934 as a prestige project of the Dollfuss-Schuschnigg regime. After 1945 the historical-political contradictions and conflicts of the Second Republic become manifest here. Official Austria commemorated both the Wehrmacht soldiers who fell in World War II and the resistance against the Nazi regime. The conflict-ridden history of the central memory of the republic up to the current redesign is reconstructed in the contributions by Dieter A. Binder, Stefan Gugerel, Richard Hufschmied, Richard Kurdiovsky, Richard Lein, Peter Pirker, Anna Stuhlpfarrer and Heidemarie Uhl.
