Synopsis

The volume brings together the contributions to an international conference marking the 200th birthday of Ferdinand Gregorovius (18211891). It was related to the edition of his largely unknown "Collected German and Italian Letters", which allow a completely new look at the doyen of medieval studies and successful author. The articles are dedicated to his view of Catholicism and Judaism, his relationship to other German historians in the 19th century, the relationship between guild and private scholars and the interference of scientific research and contemporary witnesses. They illuminate Gregorovius' self-image as a scholar, philologist, writer and historian as well as his position in the international network of scholars from different perspectives. A source appendix offers a larger selection of the previously unknown Roman correspondence that Gregorovius wrote for the Berlin "National-Zeitung". Along with his diaries, the articles are a first-class source for the German view of Italy, the Risorgimento and Roman city history.
