Synopsis

The twelve articles in the art-historical volume offer an insight into current research on the dynamics and characteristics of the visual culture of the 13th century. A multi-faceted picture of this innovative epoch is drawn up in connection with the history of ideas and detailed analysis. The volume is divided into three main focal points: First, more general, cross-media questions are dealt with. Among other things, aspects of the history of reception, such as the changes in the representation of emotions observed in the 13th century, are discussed critically. The second part deals with the intensity and impact of regional and supra-regional exchange. This left tangible traces in the artistic development, the evaluation of which allows conclusions to be drawn about the structures of the cultural transfer that is decisive for European development. The articles in the third section are devoted to important phenomena of the time, including the emergence of a new type of altar and painted horn plate bindings as well as the increasing spread of psalteries for laypeople and changes in painting techniques.
