In their range and variety encyclopedias are a reflection of the knowledge avaiable at a given time, the growth of that knowledge and the relative importance attached to it; at the same time they show us how knowledge is organised and communicated in different periods.
As such they are an important key to an understanding of the epoch in which they materialize and the texts originating in that period.
It is thus the aime of the present volume - which assembles contributions from scholars working in the field of theology, history, history of science, German and Romance studies - to provide an incentive for broader research into encyclopedias of the early modern age.
