Synopsis

Science and politics are of fundamental importance for the development and continued existence of human society. It therefore makes sense to empirically investigate their representativesthe representatives of intellect and power. This volume 21 presents initial findings from larger research projects that pursue another essential goal: the contextualization of the elite debate within East-West research. Knowledge about leadership groups, their development, and their position in the social structure provides essential insight into the society in question and creates the basis for predictions. This volume contains the revised papers presented at a conference at the Tutzing Political Academy in March 1986 on the topic "Elite in Science and Politics: Empirical Studies and Theoretical Approaches." A meeting at which specialists exchange and present the results of their years of research is always filled with condensed findings. Hypotheses of various kinds, detailed empirical analyses, attempts at theory formation, an almost overwhelming abundance of individual findings, and finally, trains of thought at a high level of abstraction exist side by side and urge mutual reference. This volume can only reflect a small excerpt.
