En un pequeño pueblo de Inglaterra, durante unas vacaciones, una adolescente desaparece. El suceso altera el sosegado ritmo de vida de sus habitantes, que se unen en una intensa búsqueda mientras una multitud de periodistas cubre la noticia y la policìa se moviliza para encontrarla. La investigación se prolonga durante meses, pero la vida continúa y el tiempo termina imponiéndose de manera inexorable.
