Far from being outmoded, the notion of commitment is still useful and fruitful when it comes to thinking about literature. This study takes as its starting point the evolution of discourse as crystallized in the work of J.-P. Sartre and incorporates a collection of international works to set out a typology of contemporary literary engagement.
