Prophecy's claim to authority must be justified and can be challenged. In terms of textual history and theology, prophetic texts of the Old Testament pose special challenges for ancient translators and modern interpreters alike. Ancient Greek translations are caught in the tension between fidelity to the texts considered sacred and the need to update these texts in the light of new theological developments, e.g., an increasingly transcendent image of God and Torah-oriented ethics.
