Die Erste Republik Osterreich (1918--1938): Das Provisorium

The First Republic is usually seen as the failed predecessor of the Second. This approach has proven itself as a self-confidence-building prologue of the Second Republic, but it does little to help understand the interwar period. Lothar Höbelt describes the First Republic as a provisional arrangement that never completely managed to break away from the unfinished, makeshift character. He does not portray the events of 1918-1938 as a history of missed opportunities, but rather "how it actually was". Using the archives of all three camps, from industry and agrarians, from the point of view of the diplomats and the sometimes very undiplomatic military associations.
