Der Arbeit Nachgehen?: Auseinandersetzungen Um Lebensunterhalt Und Mobilität (Österreich 1880-1938)
Synopsis
The study examines how new ideas and hierarchies of work were created, negotiated and implemented in the Habsburg Monarchy and Austria from 1880-1938. Instead of postulating a certain concept of work, arguments about work and livelihood are made the subject. The starting point is controversial practices and gainful employment that have so far hardly been systematically integrated into the history of work, which were mostly unprofitable and insecure, sometimes also forbidden, and associated with a high degree of mobility: from traveling trade and commerce to moving around looking for work up to begging and vagabonding. Because the history of work also includes everything that has been understood as non-work or as incorrect work over the course of time. On the basis of various sources, the author not only presents official measures and practices, she systematically reconstructs interactions and also essentially includes the perspectives of those who organized their livelihood in such controversial ways.
