Preserved for a long time in the Archives of the Senate of the Italian Republic and never published before, the text is probably the most important work by Amintore Fanfani, representing both the summit of his historical thinking and his political testament. The volume, which sums up a decade of studies, focuses on topics such as the technological innovations of the third industrial revolution, their effects on employment and on economic and social structures, the relationship between the change in economic structures and institutions, the changes in international relations caused by the different degrees of development. "In front of a man who has lost control of his economical actions", as the curator Monika Poettinger wrote, "that of Fanfani is a cry of rebellion that resounds throughout the short century. With the emphasis of a preacher of a new humanism, the statesman exhorts men to exercise their will in directing their actions and to regain the responsibility of the economic progress of all mankind".
