This book is concerned with community participation in the slums of Bombay and examines slum-dwellers′ needs for housing and basic services. Vandana Desai focuses on two issues: What impact does community mobilization have on the process of slum upgrading? What is the extent of participation and how does it affect the services provided? The author seeks to understand how the housing and basic service needs of the urban poor are articulated and fulfilled, their involvement in community organizations and the role that the community and its leaders play in influencing state action.
