Synopsis

Unfinished buildings and structural elements may be frequently observed in imperial architecture. To date, this phenomenon has not been examined systematically. Case studies presented at the workshop made it possible for the first time to acquire a sense of the scope of the articulations of non-completion in imperial architecture. It was also possible to explore the range of conceivable interpretations on the basis of marks on the stone and work processes that can be inferred from them. At the same time fundamental methodological approaches for the analysis of unfinished architecture were discussed. It became apparent that a binding terminology and a procedure for distinguishing different types of non-completion were an important basis for studying the subject in greater depth. A preliminary proposal is made in this volume. In addition, it became abundantly clear that every instance of non-completion requires an approach that is individually adapted to the respective context, as the historical and cultural background of the phenomenon can be multifaceted. With their wide-ranging focus, the contributions to the workshop are intended first and foremost to stimulate continued interest in and discussion of the question of non-completion.
