Angelica Deverell is the daughter of a shopkeeper whose sister works in the houses of the upper echelons of society and helps pay for Angel's education. Angel begins to write gothic-romantic, gradiloquent, false and fascinating novels, turning her into a fashionable writer, making her rich and eventually becoming convinced that she is a heroine of one of her own books.
