A dying father's statement takes Lucy on a quest to the Yorkshire coast and the alum works at Ravenscar in 1802. Lucy Mitchell's father tells her that "the de Northbys owe you". Her mother dismisses his words as the confusion of a dying man, but Lucy is determined to investigate. Lucy and her sister Alice find employment as seaweed gatherers in Ravenscar, where she meets handsome army officer, Mark Cossart.
